Jérôme Gautier est un designer et artiste suisse. Formé en New Media Design et Parametric Design à la Berlin University of the Arts, il conçoit et adapte ses propres outils, logiciels et machines, pour dessiner au pen-plotter.

Jérôme Gautier is a Swiss designer and artist. Trained in New Media Design and Parametric Design at the Berlin University of the Arts, he builds and adapts his own tools, software and machines, to draw with the pen-plotter.

Ce n'est pas seulement le motif qui l'intéresse, mais aussi ce que l'œil en fait. Sur la feuille, il n'y a que des traits plats, tracés à l'encre, lentement, un par un. Le volume, la profondeur, le moiré naissent du regard. Chaque pièce est réglée sur une hésitation de l'œil qui passe entre le plat et le relief, la surface et le volume, sans tout à fait pouvoir trancher.

It is not only the pattern that interests him, but also what the eye does with it. On the paper there are only flat lines, drawn in ink, slowly, one by one. The volume, the depth, the moiré are born of the looking. Each piece is tuned to a hesitation of the eye, passing between flat and relief, surface and volume, without quite being able to decide.

Pour parvenir à ce résultat, le dessin ne doit pas seulement être envisagé comme une intention artistique, recomposée à sa façon par une machine. Le spectateur est aussi un créateur : en tant que tiers inclus, il achève l'œuvre en la revêtant de son volume.

To get there, the drawing cannot only be understood as an artistic intention, recomposed in its own way by a machine. The viewer is also a creator: as the included third, they complete the work by dressing it in its volume.
