Jérôme Gautier est un designer et artiste suisse. Formé en New Media Design et Parametric Design à la Berlin University of the Arts, il conçoit et adapte ses propres outils, logiciels autant que machines, pour dessiner au pen-plotter.

Jérôme Gautier is a Swiss designer and artist. Trained in New Media Design and Parametric Design at the Berlin University of the Arts, he builds and adapts his own tools, software as much as machines, to draw with the pen-plotter.

Ce qui l'intéresse n'est pas le motif, mais ce que l'œil en fait. Sur la feuille, il n'y a que des traits plats, tracés à l'encre, lentement, un par un. Le volume, la profondeur, le moiré n'y sont pas : ils naissent dans le regard. Chaque pièce est réglée au point précis où l'œil hésite, entre le plat et le relief, entre l'ordre et la surprise, sans tout à fait pouvoir trancher.

What interests him is not the pattern, but what the eye does with it. On the paper there are only flat lines, drawn in ink, slowly, one by one. The volume, the depth, the moiré are not there: they arise in the looking. Each piece is tuned to the exact point where the eye hesitates, between flat and relief, between order and surprise, without quite being able to decide.

Le dessin se fait alors à trois : une intention, une machine qui recompose les formes à sa façon, et un regardeur qui, sans le savoir, termine l'œuvre en y voyant un volume qui n'existe nulle part ailleurs que dans son œil.

The drawing is then made by three: an intention, a machine that recomposes the forms in its own way, and a viewer who, without knowing it, finishes the work by seeing in it a volume that exists nowhere but in their own eye.
